Laboratory Technician

Salary: In the region of £23,628 per annum per annum (£12,159 pro-rata)

Start date: September 2019
Contract: Part-Time (0.6 FTE), term time only (39 + 2 weeks), permanent, subject to an enhanced DBS check 

School 21 is looking for an enthusiastic Laboratory Technician who will form an integral part of the Science Department and will assist with the delivery of an outstanding practical Science curriculum. The technician will support the running and organisation the Science Prep Room alongside another technician as we expand our teaching to over both GCSE and A level study from September. The technician will have a vital role to play in the Science Department, both in support of teachers and in having responsibility for various administrative matters. The primary responsibility is to ensure that pupils derive maximum benefit from practical lessons by communicating well with teaching staff to make sure that practical lessons are properly equipped. Other important tasks involve the maintenance of records, chemicals and equipment. In addition, one of the main responsibilities is to make sure that all the equipment is prepared safely and delivered/cleared away in a timely manner. It is expected that the laboratories are maintained in a safe and tidy fashion and that standard safety procedures are known and adhered to at all times. It would be advantageous if applicants had a basic knowledge of First Aid and a competency in ICT is necessary. Ideally, the technician will have a specialism in Physics, however experience across all three science subjects or a general science technician with experience are encouraged to apply.


The role will suit someone with excellent communication, time management and organisational skills and someone who is able to show initiative and flexibility while balancing a range of scientific, health and safety and maintenance/cleaning responsibilities. We are looking for someone who can bring rigour, an eye for detail and previous laboratory experience to our established, but growing science team who teach across the middle, secondary and sixth form schools.

The technician will be responsible to the Science Team for:  

Establishing and maintaining an organised and safe Prep Room  

Developing requisition procedures and health and safety systems  

Timely delivery of requested practical materials  

Maintenance of equipment  

Stock control  

Occasional class demonstrations and in lesson support/support with educational visits

Maintenance of laboratory supplies


Supporting the delivery of the Science Curriculum:  

Preparing of resources (including chemicals), selecting and assembling the correct apparatus  

Obtaining materials by local purchase

Giving technical advice to staff

Attending Science meetings and offering suggestions that will support delivery of concepts through practical science

Assisting practical classes and carrying out demonstrations where required by teachers
