Oracy

All teachers at School 21 are oracy teachers. Oracy means learning to talk, and learning through talk, to improve a student’s ability to communicate effectively.

We have developed a framework for oracy that enables staff to teach using oracy strategies across the school, creating opportunities for every child (aged 4-18) to talk and listen in every lesson. Our aim as a school is to elevate speaking to the same status as reading and writing.

Oracy is taught as a curriculum subject in Year 9. In the last four years, our ‘Leadership Ignite’ events have given Year 9 students the chance to advocate for real change in the school (including new water fountains and alterations to the school timetable!)
